Play

Well, I know where her favorite place to play is!

And Mary Claire likes it too!

I set up a "science experiment" for the big kids because the twins were being low-maintenance...

Colored vinegar, baking soda, eye dropper.  Awesome play!

Of course, they eventually dumped all the vinegar in...  So I set up their next experiment!

Also, if you skip the food coloring this is an awesome "cleaning" experiment - totally let them clean the stove with the leftovers once...

Goop!  Stringy, disgusting, and awesome!

Maybe the best picture I've ever taken of what John Paul actually looks like when he's not making weird faces - too bad there's goop all over his chin!

And since it's just corn starch and water, it didn't matter that they decided to do "tongue stringing" and try to see how far it would stretch from their tongue to their hand.

And while they looked disgustingly dirty, it rinsed off SO easily in the sink!

And dried right on the table so that I could pull the dustbuster out and clean it up within minutes after bedtime.

Did they make a mess?

Yes.

Did they stain their clothes?

Probably (a white shirt?  WHY did I not make her change?).

Did they have an AWESOME time playing?

Absolutely.

Linking up with Cari for this week's theme, Play.

  1. Looks like a lot of fun! I would do it outside in bathing suits then just hose them down. Win-win! Great pics!

    1. Such a blast! Although I feel like all that vinegar might kill some of our plants if we used it outside!

  2. That is one of the best photos of John Paul! I know he's almost four but he looks so grown up already! It cracks me up that he's playing in his little plaid newsboy hat.

Is that the ikea circus tent? I've been wanting to get some kind of a tent for Colton.

Also, I think we bought you that jumperoo at your shower. You are definitely getting your (our?) money's worth! :)

    1. I was just watching old videos of him today and I can't BELIEVE how big he's gotten!!! And the hat is his "scientist hat," he tells me. Yesterday it was his carpenter hat.

That's the ikea tent - they don't use it as much as I wish, but it's always a huge hit during playdates and I fill it with pillows and lie down in it sometimes :P

And you guy did get us that jumperoo! I think the twins like it even more than John Paul and Cecilia did - definitely an awesome gift!

    2. I think you just made me realize that my "wanting a tent for my kids" is actually ME wanting a tent. Oh well. Why have kids if you can't play with their stuff, right? ;) I seriously can't wait for real sized legos again!

P.S. Emmeline is 11 months old. Seriously, when did that happen? Wasn't I just 39 weeks pregnant last month or something? Times sure flies when you're sleep deprived.

    3. I'm pretty excited for real legos too, partially because I know what I'll be getting Andrew for every Christmas present at that point!

  4. You are so brave and so kind. I feel like I am getting too old for this. My poor little kids. I am mentally committing to trying this with them. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Ooh, what a great idea!!! I am going to have to try those science experiments. My 4 year old loves to "experiment" and do "projects".

    1. As few ingredients as possible makes me more likely to do them - so easy!

    1. It made the color mixing interesting too, because they layered the different colors but it didn't mix until there was more liquid. I kind of want to try it myself!

    1. And they beg to whitewash the fence, too, right? Mark Twain must have traveled forward in time to research Tom Sawyer!

    2. Ooh I'll have to try that too! I wonder if it'll work well for cleaning the bathtub :P

  9. I LOVE THIS! When my kids were little I would let them get so messy and stuff all over!

    2. If you don't already, buy vinegar at Costco! I do because I use it for washing towels in the washing machine and cleaning various things around the house. But all of these suggestions of using it to let your kids help clean are brilliant!

    3. I need to!!! I'm so behind on the green cleaning game because Andrew does all our cleaning... I just need to find some reusable spray bottles and we'll be good - John Paul was BEGGING me to let him wash the windows today!

  11. What awesome sensory play! It's always hard to convince yourself to do messy play but isn't is so worth it (once you've survived it, haha)....

  12. I am also going to use this food coloring idea. Brilliant! And, since we're supposed to have good weather this weekend, we'll do it outside with the kiddie pool.

    1. Ooh I should totally do it to make them clean out our sand & water table! I wonder if it's safe to pour out outside - I feel like they might kill a lot of grass if it's not...

  13. I'm doing food coloring and vinegar on my next grumpy day- you're inspirational. Have you done cloud dough yet? I bet they'd love it. (And HOORAY for low-maintenance twin days!)
