Summer Fun!

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

I think you know by now that we rarely leave the house...  I mean, I suppose we go outside, but we don't go all the places that most people seem to hit up during the summer.  It's a LOT of work to time naps just right so that we can get out of the house together - we're pretty much limited to the 10-12 time slot (IF the babies have taken morning naps at a normal time) or maybe 3-5, but that's only if I don't really need to make much for dinner.

And since we're still transitioning the babies from 3 naps/day to 2, half the time one of them (usually Elizabeth) desperately needs a late afternoon nap, or just wakes up ridiculously early and has to nap early, so our entire day is spent waiting for a baby to wake up and we can't leave.

So we've taken to creating our own fun in the yard!

A sprinkler inside a wading pool

Total control of the water!

The occasional sibling conversation

Hanging out with Aunt Sister!

And of course, attempting to consume fists full of grass (Elizabeth was napping, or she would have joined in)!

Discovering what the rainwater has done to the sand...

And "painting" her swimsuit with it.

Of  course, the tummy needed a little love, too!

"You mean I wasn't supposed to do that?"
How are you staying entertained at home?  Obviously one of our favorite activities is collecting bug bites (sarcasm)...  What are your favorite stay-at-home summer activities?

  2. I'm a boring mom and being pregnant with twins isn't helping. We love collecting bug bites, too. So many hungry mosquitos in our yard! Wading pool, tricycles on the sidewalk, crayons and cardboard or butcher paper on the deck are about all I've got. The kids don't mind a bit, though.

    1. I wish we had a flat enough sidewalk that they could ride their bikes (Well, we also need to put together John Paul's new bike...)! Maybe if we clear out the car port they can use the tight accommodations to practice?

  3. My 3 yr old is way into the sprinkler but the 18 month old won't ANYTHING to do with it. It is really funny!

    1. John Paul was scared of it until he saw just how into it Cecilia was! Now he loves it, too :)

  4. We only have our twins right now (vs. bigger kids + baby twins) but the precision timing required for getting out the door is very familiar. They take pretty regularly timed naps so it's predictable, but there's such a narrow window: Locate carseats, stroller, diaper bag, wallet, phone in advance. First baby is awake! Lightning change, bottle, next twin change, bottle, into carseats, and by the time you've gotten wherever you're going there's half an hour before you need to leave for the next nap. Our yard is very mosquito-y this summer, but weekly library trips are helping with our sanity. If it's a busy week I order books online in advance so I can just run in, grab our stack of books, and head back out. Keeps me from going crazy from reading the same 15 board books over and over and over again :).

    1. I really need to hit the library with the kids - the problem is, we often end up with a temper tantrum when leaving the library that I can't take care of on my own since I can't wear a baby, push a stroller, AND physically carry two older children out of the library :P I should give it another try though!

  5. Somebody told me that catnip takes care of mosquitoes. I can't vouch for it, but if you want me to bring some up this weekend, I can do that, Rosie.

That full-length picture of Cecilia—my goodness! Are you sure it's her and not her mom at that age? Except for the clothes, you could have fooled me!

  6. Grace loves riding her trike, blowing bubbles, and helping me water the plants with her little watering can. We only have one baby to work around and I still feel like we never get out!

  7. If you are feeling adventurous position your pool so the slide goes into it and let the hose run down it..... redneck waterslide! My twins are 3 and they looooove it!! And yes, going anywhere with twins is an epic undertaking. I hardly ever went out alone with them. Little Brother on the other hand, he just got dragged along for the rider. Singletons are so much more portable!

    1. I keep meaning to do that! It only ever occurs to me after the pool is already filled with water, at which point it would be waaaaaaaaay too heavy to move!

  8. We sometimes paint outside- finger paints, tempra paint, doesn't matter. Let em get totally messy and then wash off in the pool.
