We've been slacking on our mental math, and it shows. The number of times every day I have to remind certain children of how to do their times tables is not insignificant. But I didn't have it in me to drill them until they had the facts down pat! Enter Math Sprint - the Mental Math Game from Byron's Games. Created for kids, by a kid, this kept the children from age five through eleven engaged in our family, and I'm definitely looked forward to playing it more as the weather turns colder and we spend more time indoors.

I have a new kindergartner, and he's the sweetest, most eager child... And I still spent much of the summer hoping he'd be willing to just do his own thing so that I didn't really have to "do" kindergarten with him? Of course, this is the child who has spent the past two years insisting he DOES do school, and that he's in PRESCHOOL!!! All while trying to sit in my lap while I do lessons with all the older children. I've thrown workbook after workbook at him, and he really has loved them all. But it was time for something a little more structured, and ThemeVille Math has the structure he needs without being overly loud or introducing concepts that are unfamiliar to me.

We received a copy of Mastering Logic & Math Problem Solving from The Critical Thinking Co.™, and it came just at the right time! Attention was waning on our regular math curriculum, and I wanted a way to get my oldest son off screens anyway, so having a hard copy workbook was exactly what we needed. The workbooks are available in digital format (easily reproduced if you'll be using them with multiple students) or hard copy, and shortly after it arrived, my 10-year-old had several books he wanted me to add to his wish list from the company!

Neat Little Boxes: Channie's Visual Handwriting & Math Review (A Homeschool Review Crew Post)

Monday, October 28, 2019

I've been feeling more confident about our math this school year after several weeks of more intensive practice. But it gradually became evident that even when math problems were being answered correctly, they were... Not exactly legible.

If I'm grading math worksheets, I shouldn't have to ask a child multiple times which number each squiggle actually represents! So Channie's Visual Handwriting & Math workbooks, with their neat, color-coded boxes looked right up our alley. Cecilia is in 3rd grade and has just started with more complicated multiplication, so their One Page A Day 2 Digit Multiplication practice was just what she needed for a little extra drilling. And in the hopes of preventing this from becoming an issue later on, Peter tried out the Neat Numbers workbook.

Can an App Save Our Math Lessons? Smartick Review: A Homeschool Review Crew Post

Tuesday, October 22, 2019

School started back up in August and I wasn't quite sure how much the girls' math skills had atrophied over our long break... Turns out it was a lot. This was something I'd never dealt with before! Suddenly there were temper tantrums accompanying every single math lesson because all three had magically forgotten everything they had learned over the past year.

I was exhausted dealing with it. There had to be some easy way to get those skills back! So I pretty much jumped at the chance to let them try Smartick. Smartick is an app that helps them review math skills while automatically tracking progress and offering more practice in problem areas.
