Get Your Girls Praying: Be Yourself Journal
Monday, December 16, 2019
My friend Amy wrote a really sweet book a couple years ago. I was so excited by the concept, but knew my oldest daughter wasn't quite old enough for it, since she was 6 and also hated writing (the book was a journal, but there's way more than just writing activities in it). Gradually Cecilia got older and I decided to give the journal a try - she loved it! At 6, she was definitely too young. At 8, she was just right! And lo and behold, seeing her use the journal made her younger sisters get a little jealous, wishing for their own copies!

So when Amy asked if the twins (who are now 7 and actually enjoy writing!) would like their own copies, I jumped at the chance! And they gasped with excitement when the first journal arrived in the mail, sitting down with their new markers and getting to work together. Being twins, it didn't seem to occur to them that they didn't have to share this journal... So when I told them another copy was arriving for them so that they didn't have to share, they were so happy! Amy's a twin mom, she knows how hard it is for twins to have to share everything.
What exactly am I raving about? Be Yourself! A Journal for Catholic Girls is targeted towards girls ages 9+, but if you have a daughter or know a girl who is a little younger and enjoys reading, coloring, and writing, I think it would be right up her alley. I would say that depending on the girl, it would work for up to age 14, but the description recommends age 9-12.
Inside the journal, you'll find coloring pages, writing prompts, quotes from saints, Scripture, and the Catechism, and much more. There are tons of questions for girls to answer and reflect on, little love letters from Jesus, activities to do... I know these journals will keep my girls busy for a long time, and I love that it's a visually appealing journal, but it isn't the superficial sort of book that I would probably have enjoyed as a girl their age or older, focusing on lip gloss, nail polish, and "crushes." Let these girls be little!
Have a girl you know would love this book? It would make a perfect Christmas present! Pair it with scrapbooking & craft supplies in stockings (I know my girls will be getting some washi tape and maybe gel pens), and consider taking your daughter/niece/goddaughter to make a Holy Hour with a Be Yourself Journal to help guide her prayers.
I received complementary copies from Amy and Our Sunday Visitor in exchange for this review, but all opinions are my own.
