As a member of the Homeschool Review Crew, I receive a membership to SchoolhouseTeachers.com for free. The website has a plethora of online courses with lesson plans, videos, tutorials, and printable components. Using the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership, it's possible to build your own curriculum solely using the materials available on the website, if you just click the Scope and Sequence page.
We have our curriculum pretty well mapped out, but it's always tempting to see what additional resources we could add on! I clicked the 5th grade Scope and Sequence page and was interested in what the Heritage Crafts Course immediately; students learn how to make hand-dipped candles, corn husk dolls, dried apples, and more. It seemed right up my children's alleys!
Included in the lesson plan are tutorials with instructions and photos for making all the items listed in the course outline. It would pair perfectly with studies on colonial times or reading the Little House books!
I also hope to use the Simply Shakespeare course to help guide our Shakespeare studies as we begin a new play soon. We finished reading through The Taming of the Shrew together and are trying to decide on the next play we will read through. Hopefully we can get a larger group of local homeschoolers together for something more exciting than just reading around the table, but for now we can use the resources in this course to expand upon what we read together.
A major area of neglect in our schooling is art... I'm just not good at prioritizing formal study, although the kids love creating their own art all day long! It's nice to have a little extra inspiration though, so we decided to start some easy lessons from ArtAchieve, a separate program with a membership included through SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It is so nice to have things all laid out for me without having to cobble anything together or buy extra materials!
We ended up doing two lessons because the kids were eager to keep going! I really appreciated that there were instructions that included how not to get discouraged and how to combat perfectionism... There are definitely children in this family who need help in that regard!
The slide-type lesson presentation allowed us to go at our own pace...
And everybody was proud of their finished product!
In addition to all these courses, there are reading lists, videos (we might watch this one to complement our Greek History studies), World Book resources, worksheets for extra practice, and tons more! Customize weekly or 9-week schedules for your students here. There are so many other resources that I've only just started exploring!
