5/52: Nesting

Monday, February 4, 2019

In the home repair saga that never ends (remember that lightning strike back in September? Still not done dealing with the aftermath), we had some siding replaced last week. Unfortunately, this meant a heck of a lot of banging on the walls, to the point of knocking things off and breaking glass. I mean, I needed to clean those kitchen shelves off anyway, but I wanted to do it on my own terms! Nope. Had to happen right away! Anyway, they're a LOT cleaner now, and forced nesting is probably the only way to get hugely pregnant and exhausted me to do anything productive... Open shelving is such a great idea until you realize just how dusty and grimy everything gets!

Cecilia took issue with how I had arranged some things, so she took matters into her own hands, placing her favorite vintage tea cups & her birthday orchid on that top shelf. She's right, it definitely looks better! Now I want more plants, but I can't generally keep houseplants alive, so a friend suggested fake succulents and I might just go for it, even though I can already see Andrew rolling his eyes.

Oh, did I mention that the forced nesting day was also Cecilia's birthday??? It really added a whole lot of stress to everything, considering I also had to bake a cake and make a special meal. But the cake got baked and happily eaten, even if it did look kind of like a wreck. Strawberries in January are not my favorite thing but when it's one of the birthday girl's few requests, you go for it and everybody's happy! And the amaryllis finally bloomed right before Candlemas, which was also a big birthday treat for Cecilia!

I had to get a 38(ish)-week picture because even though I'm sure the baby won't *actually* be here any day now, it still feels like it could be any day now, and it's always fun to have a bump shot as close to the due date as possible! My ankles are crazy-swollen and I'm super-exhausted, but we've probably got another 2-3 weeks to go. Come on, baby! We're ready(ish)!

  1. I don't know what you're talking about because that cake looks delicious! I love love love your blue glass collection, we have a few pieces over here too.
You look wonderful, and your bump is beautiful! You're in the home stretch, praying for a peaceful labor and delivery!

    1. She wanted it from a box mix so it ended up not tasting as delicious as it could have! Next time I'm just making my sourdough chocolate cake, it's way better!

  2. Real succulents are pretty easy to take care of. I kill a lot of plants but you CANNOT kill an Aloe plant (and it's great to have around for burns!). And all the different succulents I have take a lot of neglect really well.

  3. Fake plants are life savers -- I have a few real plants indoors (snake plants and aloe seem to both be indestructible, which is good) but I supplement everywhere else with fake ones. They make really realistic-looking ones now, too, compared to even a couple years ago! (Target has a good selection, even online, and pricier places like West Elm if you wanna invest a little more $.)

    1. We saw some really nice fake ones at Michael's, we had to feel them and look carefully to see if they were real or fake!

  4. Everything looks great...cake and shelves!!! I still need to take down my Christmas garland, but climbing up and down even a step stool for 30 minutes at 38 weeks is low on my list. Just keeping up on schoolwork for kids and general house cleaning is enough to make my cankles swell! Only 14 days to go.....if baby wants to show up on time. Prayers for you and baby from Oregon!
