17/52: Egg Hunting and Family Photo Fail
Tuesday, April 30, 2019
Happy Easter! We enjoyed egg hunts nearly every day of the Octave (eventually the kids got tired of filling eggs and I wasn't about to fill 3 dozen on my own), managed to eat all the eggs that got dyed, took the week off from school, and ate lots of delicious sweets!
I think this is the first year of egg hunting where I could actually hide eggs in somewhat difficult places with the general expectation that they'd be found. The older kids requested tricky hiding places and then generally still didn't realize they should look UP, or under things, or anywhere but just straight ahead of them in the grass. But they started getting the hang of it by the end of the week! We do color-coded eggs to make sure that each kid gets the same number & that they're hidden in appropriate places for each kid (so Edith's were all in plain sight and they got trickier as the kids get older). It works really well and I feel a little bit like I'm coddling them but also it means way fewer tears, so I'm going to do egg hunts like this until I die.
Since our van is out of commission, we had to tag team Sunday Mass, which meant we couldn't get a picture all together in the morning... I had everybody get dressed back up in the afternoon for a picture, but it did not go well. First we had Cecilia kind of hidden behind the twins. Then I had her move down to the middle step and she was SO ANGRY she just scowled the whole time. So I tried one last time to have everybody on one step but they were a little too close together on the older kids' side. So as I ran to my perch after pressing the self-timer button, I told them to move a little to the side... Which resulted in Elizabeth basically being kicked out of the family. I realized after the fact that Mary Claire probably was trying to get farther away from Peter, who alternates between being her best friend and her most bitter enemy.
At least Lucy looked adorable in her bonnet?
I'm hoping we can try again on Sunday, when Cecilia receives her First Holy Communion. Say a prayer for her? She's a little nervous!

Mom of 4, for 19 years, and that is exactly how we've always done egg hunts! When a kid ages out of hunting, they get to hide eggs for the younger ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to get them excited about hiding eggs, but no takers yet!
DeleteHappy Easter! I think you did a beautiful job of rounding everyone up for a photo and you have a great plan for the Easter Egg hunt! All the Easter bonnets bring back memories from when I was growing up (and brings a smile to my face). : ) God Bless You and your precious family! <3
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dawn! I always look forward to the Easter bonnets :)
DeleteMy sister-in-law started color coding our egg hunts a few years ago and I completely agree- works so well & keeps the tears to a minimum!
ReplyDeleteAnything that reduces tears is a major win!
