16/52: Holy Week

We did it! Lent is over! Happy Easter!

I anticipated taking Holy Week off from school, but decided that since we'd already gotten several half-weeks in and were taking Easter week off, I should probably just keep on keeping on as long as I could... So we got Monday-Wednesday school done, although by Wednesday "school" consisted of reading the daily readings, discussing, and building Lego models of various Holy Week events. I think Charlotte Mason would approve.

Andrew had a run-in with a deer and the van, so we've been sans family transportation since early Wednesday morning, super-appropriate for Lent but getting old fast... Anyway, it meant that he could only fit a couple kids in the car to take the Easter food to be blessed on Saturday, so the EXTREMELY ANGRY older two got the consolation prize of being allowed to set up the Easter egg dye (after first washing all the dishes, washing the eggs, steaming the eggs, and cleaning off the table. It's amazing how much they can accomplish with proper motivation!). At first they wanted to wait for the other kids before they started, but then they realized that it was much, much smarter to just get started and not wait for the stragglers! Edith didn't even realize what they were doing until the middle three got home and asked her if she wanted to dye eggs. She was very confused, but decided she would like pink eggs and ONLY pink eggs, so Andrew dyed them for her while she watched, and she was perfectly happy with that.

And, just like every single other year, all the kids DESPERATELY wanted to eat as many hard boiled eggs as possible immediately after dying them, and then realized the next day that they don't actually like hard boiled eggs.

This is why I limit them to 5 or 6 dyed eggs each.

Of course, the next day I made a dozen of them into deviled eggs and THOSE got eaten up quickly, so maybe I just need to make deviled eggs every day?

  1. Haha, similar here- kids *love* dyeing eggs but eating the hard boiled eggs isn't as popular. I always forget to make deviled eggs- good idea!

    1. We finally managed to get them all eaten yesterday! But yeah, I think 2 dozen is our limit...

  2. Lots of people don't like hardboihard eggs. I say serve 'em on everything bagels with avocado .
Do you think you could just let your kids have stickers and crayons and markers to decorate eggs? Could you convince them it's better than dye? My great grandma made gorgeous eggs, blowing out the yolk/whites and decorating with Christmas cards, cloth braid and ribbons, etc. We have a newspaper article, but we don't know what happened to the eggs. My mother wishes she had one.

    1. It's the yolk! I keep trying to convince them to eat it WITH the white, but they always end up just leaving it and refusing to eat it...

    1. I will eat hard boiled eggs because at least they're quick to eat, but yeah deviled eggs are far superior!
