Felt Fractions

Monday, February 11, 2013

I have not done anything crafty since the twins were born.  But I made these a while ago, and it might be my most recent *actual* craft, so I'm going to take pictures and pretend I just made these so that I can join Ana's link-up.

I found the idea on Pinterest and followed the instructions here.  I'm REALLY not crafty, but I can cut felt and puffy paint it, right?

Seriously, you don't even need me to tell you how to do this.

Maybe you're fancy and have a sewing machine - this would take almost no time if you do!  I sewed it by hand and it still took very little time.

So here we go:

Find a circle size you like.  Trace it on a bunch of felt.  Cut out, pin, and sew together using a blanket stitch or modified blanket stitch (that's what I call "I didn't actually know what a blanket stitch was so I made it up and it kind of looked the same") or whatever you want.  Then puffy paint the fraction shapes and let it dry!

Circles (can you find the puffy paint error?  Also, if you look closely you can see that my stitching started out NOT so hot and got better as I progressed.  But guess what?  The kids don't care!)

Squares (look at how beautiful my 2's are!  I'm kind of obsessed...)

And the triangles that I actually finished...

Repeat with square, triangle, and whatever other shapes you're inclined to try. I DO have 1/4 size triangles cut out but I never ended up sewing them together because I got distracted. They are still sitting in my Ikea sewing kit, pinned together and unloved. But they are purple. Some day I'll finish. But I've realized that sewing while nursing babies is probably a bad idea...

See how much she loves them?

Anyway, John Paul and Cecilia LOVE these.  John Paul because he is maybe the biggest nerd any child has ever been.  Cecilia because they are COLORS!  They like putting them together and making patterns with them, and since they're felt they stick to the couch and the rug easily.  They also like to line up the big shapes and jump from shape to shape.

WIWS the fourth

Check me out, for the 4th week in a row I have my act together and am linking up with Fine Linen and Purple for...

What I Wore Sunday linkup

While you're here, want to stop by and give me some vegetarian recipes for Lent?  Thanks!

Not our best Mass this week.  Cecilia decided to throw a fit because there was only one purple pencil in the pew and she couldn't find it because she had put it in her offering envelope.  Then John Paul was standing where she wanted to stand.  And sitting where she wanted to sit.  So of course she had to scream and wail.  Wouldn't you?

On the plus side, one of my favorite priests was celebrating.  Did you know Justice Antonin Scalia has 9 children, one of whom is a priest in the Arlington Diocese?  We love Father Scalia :)

Anyway, here's what we wore:

John Paul is wearing the same pants as last week and his Christmas shirt from Janie & Jack via the consignment store.  He took his sweater vest off the moment we got home...

Cecilia is wearing an H&M onesie, Carter's jumper, leggings and snowflake socks because she refused to wear her awesome argyle tights.

Tried the self-timer this week, hence the particularly out-of-focus shots.  Note the wine bottles and copious amounts of liquor on top of our bookshelves.  Why yes, we ARE Catholic!

I've got on my trusty Spanx, a Banana Republic wrap dress that I've had since college (SERIOUSLY, the wrap dress is one of God's gifts to women - so very adjustable that I can pretend I'm the same size I was in college!), a couple cheapo layered forever 21 tanks (because the straps are stretchy and I can throw it away when it gets ruined without feeling too wasteful) and awesome burgundy faux-snakeskin pumps from Nine West. One of my all-time favorite pairs of shoes.

Elizabeth sports a Carter's outfit (the jumper is on backwards.  What can I say, Andrew dressed her and he's a boy :P) with pink baby legs.

Not pictured:  Andrew's orange-and-blue madras bow tie paired with another pinstriped suit, Mary Claire's rerun outfit, my cleavage-hiding scarf.

Lenten Recipes: Broccoli Cheese Soup

I am so glad Lent is right around the corner - I could use a little spiritual kick in the pants right now.  I'm excited to start reading a couple of good Catholic books through the 40 days, we'll listen to The Way of the Cross in the car (skip the last track until Easter - yikes!), and I'm hoping to steal some of Kendra's ideas for observing Lent with children (I particularly like the beans and counting to 40 before beginning each meal), among other things.

One big sacrifice we make during Lent is abstaining from meat every day, not just Fridays.  I think we started doing this together our first year of marriage?  I had been doing it for a while, but it's honestly that big a sacrifice for me since I don't like meat all that much.  It is MUCH more difficult for Andrew, who would eat meat, meat, and more meat for every meal if he could.  But abstaining from meat throughout Lent has several key benefits:

1. We never forget to abstain on Fridays!
2. We save a lot of money on food, and should probably remember to set that money aside and donate it this year.
3. It makes me meal plan in advance
4  It's just plain healthier!

So I've got a big old list of Lenten stand-bys at this point, but I'd love to hear what you cook up on Fridays (or all through Lent)!

Here's a partial list of some of our favorites (and a longer list here):

Lentil soup
Baked potato soup
Potato & corn chowder
Baked ravioli
Gnocchi w/butter & sage sauce and caprese salad
Turkeyless Thanksgiving - just a bunch of our favorite side dishes as a meal
Tomato soup & grilled cheese
Lentil shepherd's pie
Cheese stuffed shells
Cheese lasagna
Veggie fried rice w/egg drop soup
Roasted veggie quesadillas with spanish rice and kidney beans
Broccoli & cheese soup
Mac & cheese and green beans
Pesto polenta bake
(Can you see how heavily we rely on dairy?  Some day when I'm neither pregnant nor nursing, we're going vegan for Lent.  I think it's going to be the hardest thing I ever do!)

Edit:  Also cheese fondue, but only after the kids are in bed...  And frittatas.  And pizza.

I'm going to share a few of my favorite recipes because they all share the following characteristics:

-  Can either be made *way* ahead or super-quickly
-  Easy to eat one-handed (because many of us are nursing a baby or two during dinner)
-  Tasty!

So here's my recipe for Broccoli Cheese Soup:

1/2 large onion, diced
4 tbsp butter
1-3 cups cooked broccoli, as much as you happen to have leftover in the fridge
6-8 small-medium potatoes (3-4 cups peeled & cubed)
4 cups chicken broth
Heavy cream
Various cheeses, 1-2 cups total
Salt & pepper to taste
Green onions & grated cheese to garnish
Bread for dipping
(you could probably add a bunch of chopped spinach or other cooking greens - THAW AND DRAIN if it's frozen first, otherwise you'll end up with really watery soup.  Andrew hates it when I sneak tons of spinach into things, so I skipped it)

1.  Sautee onions in butter until soft (still eating meat?  Cook up some bacon, set aside as a garnish, sautee onion in the fat).  Add chicken broth (or veggie or beef - super-easy to make in the instant pot, and if you strain through this you won't end up with any chunks, so it'll still satisfy the meatless requirement) and bring to a boil.
2.  Add potatoes, simmer 15 minutes until soft.

--You can do steps 1 & 2 ahead of time whenever the kids happen to be napping and just leave it on the stove until about 15 minutes before dinner--

3.  Mash potatoes to desired consistency - maybe you want a lot of lumps, maybe you want to take a stick blender to it and puree it.  The more you mash, the thicker it will be, which is why we don't need to add flour.
4.  Reheat if needed (I started mine at 2, reheated at 5 for dinner by 5:30).  Stir in broccoli - it's okay if it falls apart!  And if you don't have any cooked already, just toss in a few cups of florets and let it boil until the broccoli softens up, too.
5.  Reduce to a simmer, stir in whatever cheese you have on hand.  I used havarti, white american, parmesan, and a mexican cheese blend.  It was amazing.  But most cheese is amazing.
6.  Turn off heat.  Add some heavy cream, or half & half, or just plain milk.  You know how creamy you want it to be.
7.  Add salt & pepper to taste.
8.  Serve with green onions & grated cheese as a garnish.  Crusty bread for dipping makes it a satisfying meal for 4 adults, or 2 adults and 2 toddlers with one bowl leftover.

You can tell I'm not a food blogger - this is the bowl of leftover soup :P

The kids really liked this - I recommend stocking up on a few loaves of crusty bread and freezing in portions you'll use, wrapped in foil.  Set it on the counter in the afternoon, heat it up at 350 for 10 minutes before dinner, and you're ready to go!  If I didn't have so many babies, I'd bake my own, but I don't quite have time for that yet...

What are your favorite meatless meals?  Any that satisfy the criteria above?  Give me recipes/blog posts!

*Edit:  I am currently nursing twins and thus am in need of 1000+ extra calories a day to nourish them.  So I tend to have a pretty heavy hand with the cheese, cream, butter, etc.  I'm 100% certain you could make this with less fat, if that's a concern of yours.  I, on the other hand, noticed (after it had melted) that John Paul put an entire stick of butter into a pot of tomato soup the other day, in addition to the 1/2 stick that was already in there.  We ate it anyway, and it was delicious.

Minnie Mouse goes EVERYWHERE with Cecilia.  And I mean EVERYWHERE.  She was sitting on the potty yesterday and John Paul saw that she didn't have her Minnie Mouse, so he immediately picked it up and ran it over to her.

She was ecstatic.  "John Paul brought me my DOLL when I'm on da POTTY!  Thank you John Paul!!!"

Have you seen a more attractive picture of a child?  Nope.  Never.

At Mass on Sunday:

John Paul, showing us a slightly pink pointer finger:  "OH!  I need a band-aid!!!"
Cecilia:  "I NEED A BAND-AID!  When you were at da doctor you got a polka dot band-aid JUST WIKE MINNIE MOUSE!!!"

She was VERY excited for her 2-year well checkup.  She was kind of amazing - showing off for the doctor & nurses, REALLY excited to pee in a cup (because John Paul got to do that 6 months ago and she still talks about it), and apparently speaking at the level of a 3.5-year-old.  But she's still ridiculously short, so she looks like an 18-month-old speaking like a 3-year-old.  I bet she totally weirds people out when they hear her.

However, she got dinosaur band-aids instead of polka dots.  This was upsetting for about 2.7 seconds.  Then she told me that her legs "Vewwy vewwy hurt."  Luckily yesterday "my legs NOT hurt anymore!"

We are officially homeowners!  Closed on our new place on Wednesday, moving on the 23rd and SO excited!  Is it weird that one reason I'm so excited is because there's a ton of natural light and I'm really looking forward to getting better indoor pictures of the kids?  But seriously I wish we had gotten our new camera long ago since I'm getting WAY better pictures, ones that I actually want to print out and display.

Need some more Cecilia quotes?

Monday afternoon:

Cecilia, kicking the swing while Mary Claire was in it: "Why you kickin' da swing???"
Me: "Cecilia, why are you kicking the swing?"
Cecilia: "Um baCUZZ?"
Me: "Because you're weird?"
Cecilia: "And STWANGE!"

Cecilia, staggering towards me while carrying the potty: "Where is da red spot?"
Me: "Cecilia, I don't think there is a red spot on the potty..."
Cecilia: "IN da potty!"
Me: "There's one in the potty?"
Cecilia, frantically: "UM I NEED TO POOP!"

Tuesday:

Cecilia, suddenly finding her flower hat:  "I found my hat!!!  And now I am cute!  And old!"

At dinner:

Me:  "Cecilia is Elizabeth's sister.  And Cecilia is Mary Claire's sister."
Andrew:  "And Cecilia is..."
Cecilia:  "CUTE!!!"

Cecilia, pointing to a snowman on Elizabeth's onesie:  "It's wike a wittle piece of children!"

That's right, this week's quick takes are pretty much just cute things that Cecilia says.
But she's just at SUCH a cute age - I did little besides talk about all the cute things John Paul said at that age, too.
And she's also pretty cute to look at.
Even when she's trying to put the lens cap back on the camera when I'm trying to take her picture.

--6--

John Paul's still here though, don't you worry!  He's just not so good at the posing thing...

Lately he's been consuming his weight in clementines daily and he thinks we should all be doing the same.  So he'll get himself a clementine and then bring one for me and one for Cecilia, even though we don't want one.  So we end up with clementines all over the living room at the end of every day...

--7--

He's also still kissing the babies ALL the time.  And they mostly don't mind, but I really wish he'd stop when they're trying to sleep!

He was looking for Mary Claire when he got up from his nap earlier.  I told him she was upstairs in the swing and he said, "OH I want to go SEE her!!!" and started running for the stairs.  Thank goodness for video monitors!  I told him he could watch her sleep in the monitor instead of waking her up by going into our room.

Yup, I'm turning him into a tiny little voyeur.

And that's that!  Check out more Quick Takes at Jen's!

Photography Challenge

Thursday, February 7, 2013

Trying out the photography challenge over at Clan Donaldson this week...  The theme is "hats or scarves."

So we just got a *real* camera for Christmas and I've been using what little spare time I have to figure out how to use it.  So far I'm REALLY good at...  knowing that I shouldn't use the flash and that manual focus is better than auto focus.  I've explored other settings, but when I've got a toddler who's only going to stay still for so long?  I put it on auto, focus it myself, and see what I can get!

Here's Cecilia looking like, 5 years older than she is.  Her Princess Leia hat is one of her favorite things right now and she wears it ALL the time.  Like, to the doctor's office for her ENTIRE 2-year well visit.  And for a nap.

She came upstairs wearing it yesterday and told me, "I cwied and cwied."

"Cecilia, why did you cry and cry?"

"Um becuzz I'm a pwincess."

"No, I'm a princess!" whined John Paul.

"I'M A PWINCESS I'M A PWINCESS!!!" she sobbed, jumping up and down and yelling at him.

So yeah, that's the hat.
