WIWS - January Style

Sunday, January 12, 2014

We had a rather odd occurrence happen this morning - somehow Mary Claire was the baby who ended up in our bed in the wee hours, and Elizabeth ended up staying in her crib until 7:30.  What the what?  This has never happened before.  And she was SO confused and amazed when she woke up and was in her crib and it was light outside.  Again, never happened before.  So weird.  And awesome - let's hope this becomes a trend!  Sleeping babies would make me veeeeeeeery happy.

Aaaaaanyway, immediately upon waking this morning, John Paul's first question was, "Could I please have my January 12 Magnifikid?  It's the Baptism of our Lord!!!  It's Ordinary Time now!!!"

Gotta love a little liturgy nerd.

I very sneakily headed into the babies' room this morning and took a picture without the kids bombarding me and trying to knock the camera off of whatever makeshift surface I used THAT week to take my outfit picture...

Here's what I wore:

Hat:  Zulily
Scarf:  Amazon (here)
Shirt:  H&M
Dress (styled as a skirt):  Ann Taylor via Twice
Tights:  H&M
Shoes:  DSW
Belt:  Stolen off a sweater from...  I dunno?  JC Penney?  It's old...
Unwashed hair:  Earliest riser woke at 7, so no time to shower!  Thank goodness for hats :)

I'm working on a winter mom style post - mostly it consists of layering sweaters and long-sleeved tops over my same old summer staples and wearing tights...  Is it worth writing/taking pictures of outfits?  We shall see...  What do you think - will you read it?

Linking up with Fine Linen & Purple - happy Sunday!

Not Much But Grace...

Saturday, January 11, 2014

It happened that dinner today was perhaps the most insane that we have ever had.

Imagine, to begin with, that Cecilia is (as usual, but at least she waited until after we had said Grace) obsessed with pulling out the bench that she and John Paul share.  Now, John Paul prefers to keep it pushed in so far that he is kneeling on the last few inches and mostly supports himself by leaning his upper body on the table.  This results in a lot of falling.

This time, however, he took her challenge and kept pushing the bench out farther and farther until they were both so far from the table they couldn't possibly eat their food.  So I suggested to Cecilia that she take her usual dinnertime potty break now, and she answered with sobs.

An old picture, but you get the point.
I think I calmed her down by showing her a mouth full of unchewed food.  So she and John Paul finally started eating and I looked over to see that Mary Claire had already finished.

Then I looked at the floor.

Great big crocodile tears of anguish at being caught (and thus scolded) rolled down her chubby cheeks as I picked up the food and gave her each piece, one by one.  Meanwhile Cecilia decided now was the time for a potty break.

Several minutes later and I got up to check on Cecilia, who was sitting on the sink naked, making sticky hand prints on the mirror.  "Did you do dis when you were a wittle girl, Mom?" She asked me.

No.  No, I did not.

Returning to the table, I caught the tail end of John Paul being scolded (yet again) for wiping his hands on his shirt.  Ignoring his final warning, he was stripped of his shirt and the sobbing ensued.

Rage from a 4-year-old is frustrating until it gets to the point where you're fighting not to break out in hysterics every time "I waaaaaaaant tooooooo KICK you!!!" is threatened in a menacing growl, accompanied by hands clawing the air.  He has never actually kicked us, but hey, he's using words to express his feelings so I'll take it.  But at the same time, who is he?  Wolverine?

Another oldie, but he hasn't changed much...

After taking five bites of his dinner (and realizing when wiping his hands on his bare stomach that yes, it IS in fact a problem that needs to be remedied), his shirt was returned and he wore an apron over it for the remainder of dinner.

Meanwhile, back in the bathroom, Cecilia had closed the door and was singing something...  I opened the door, or tried to open the door, which was blocked by her naked body, wrapped in a hand towel.

"Why are you naked and wrapped in a towel?"

"Um, because it's just my coat."

Looking more closely, I noticed the edges of her hair were wet...

Not wanting to ask, I did anyway.  "Why is your hair wet, Cecilia?"

"Um because I just dipped it in da potty."

Of course.

If she were in a fairy tale, it would be the Princess and the Pee.  Pee-hair tied up, she washed her hands and returned to the table, only to freak out because she couldn't wear her shirt anymore because she had gotten it wet and she had to eat in clothes, so I sent her to her room to find a shirt.

"A shirt with short sweeves and no marker or stains on it!!!"

This description currently applies to zero shirts in her possession, thanks to the craftiest and most coordinated 2-year-old in the house.

Sobbing.

Eventually I used her stuffed cat to convince her she needed to wear a striped shirt to match the striped cat.

Meanwhile, Mary Claire very vocally decided it was time to get out of her high chair, and Elizabeth decided the same.

Yeah, I have no pictures of the twins crying.  This is Cecilia, but you can imagine it's Mary Claire...
Lest you think Elizabeth was simply angelic, she spent the majority of the day demanding to be physically attached to me, either nursing or being bounced and danced and carried.  I remind you that she is nearly 14 months old, NOT a newborn.  "Wear her!" you say!  Yes, but wearing her means I have to be constantly dancing and singing or she protests from her perch on my back.  Life of a twin mom.  So this was a rare peaceful dinner from the elder of the twins.

And thus ended the main portion of our dinner.  How is it that so many tantrums can ensue over the course of one meal?  And how is it that a single meal can seem to drag on for hours when in fact, it only takes a mere 45 minutes?  And how is it that I haven't punted a single one of our children out the window?

Life, my friends, is never calm around here.  The moment I feel like things are under control, someone starts teething, nap schedules must change, someone goes through a sleep regression, developmental milestones, etc.  Near-constant hunger and exhaustion are par for the course, because you try sleeping when the babies are waking up 2-3 times/night at different times and half the time the 4-year-old needs to wake up to pee.  And you try eating when any meal time consists of running back and forth trying to supply food to the babies faster than they can eat it/throw it on the floor.

And so, lest I get cocky in a few weeks when things seem to be going well again, this is a reminder to myself that no matter how bad it is, it will probably get better.  And no matter how good it is, it will probably get worse.  We're getting by thanks to a whooooooooole lot of grace and not much else.

7 Quick Takes: Around Our House

--1--

I've got to warn you about this kid - she's got all of Cecilia's cuteness and seems to be headed in the John Paul direction when it comes to intelligence...  She's OBSESSED with bringing me letter magnets and blocks so that I can tell her what letter she has, and she knows a ton of them already.  Cute + Smart is such a dangerous combination! (not that Cecilia isn't smart, but she's not quite at John Paul's level...)

Aaaaand there's nothing cuter than that first tiny little hairstyle, right?

--2--

I have determined that a ponytail is NOT a good look for Cecilia:

Yeah, she looks like she has a bowl cut.  Also, HOW is her mouth that enormous???

--3--

Then I tried to take a picture of Elizabeth, and failed...

But got a halfway-decent shot with her forehead blocked...

She's absolutely hilarious - always dancing all over the place trying to make us laugh.  As soon as she hears someone laughing she comes RUNNING over, starts laughing on her own and starts dancing to make us laugh harder.  It's pretty incredible.

--4--

We finally started getting Christmas cards and letters sent out, but I still have a bunch I need to send because those addresses weren't in our spreadsheet when we printed labels...  So I'm not going to share our Christmas letter yet, but here's last year's if you want it:

The card is horrendous, but I may just upload a picture of it to make you laugh - think portrait studio gone horribly, horribly wrong (but we had a gift card so it was okay!)!

--5--

John Paul spent probably 10 minutes coloring in the To: From: on the stencil and then had me fill in the names.  Then he very carefully taped it to his most prized possession, his reference set:

Photo: He probably spent ten minutes coloring in the stencil with a pen before asking me to write the names... Either he's really sweet to give away his present, or he thinks grandma is the cheapest re-gifter ever!

I'm not sure if it's sweet that he's willing to give away his favorite present, or if he just thinks Grandma is so cheap that she would re-gift a present that doesn't even belong to her...

--6--

I've come to the conclusion that my sad lonely link-up was probably just neglected for the holidays (although I was getting fewer linkers every week...), so I'll continue it on a monthly basis and try to give you some warning - how about we shoot for Monday the 27th and link up some funny quotes?

--7--

This made me laugh so hard this morning:

They decided the doll stroller is a motorcycle and rode it together, scooting veeeeeery slowly across the room.

Yup, it was hilarious.

That's that!  Check out more takers at Conversion Diary!

KID!!!!!!!

GROWN-UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GRANDMOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Entirely typed by him.  Can you tell?

What They Said, Vol. 7

Monday, January 6, 2014

Sooo I'm thinking that given the lack of link-up participants in the past couple weeks, nobody wants me to continue this as a link-up?  I promise I don't mind, it saves me a few minutes not having to worry about the code...  So we'll just go back to the sporadic quote-posting that I did before!

Most priests don't have to deal with one-year-olds yanking the "chalice" off the "altar" and spilling the "wine" on the floor...

Anyway, life got in the way of posting this past week, as did the fact that our laptop stopped working and I really didn't want to blog from my phone!  So I've been MIA and am popping in for a quick quote update as I puzzle through everything else floating around in my head and consider perhaps posting something of substance for the first time in a long while...

Grainy phone photos courtesy of the fact that the laptop was kind enough to die immediately after I imported a bunch of photos and erased them from the memory card...

Me:  John Paul, if you're not going to eat your kiwi you can give it to the babies.
JP, excitedly:  So they can drop it on the floor!!!

Pretty much...

Cecilia, singing:  Joy to da world, our Word is gweat.  What forth, we come, what hooooo!

Yup, that's how it goes.

...

Cecilia, pooping:  Wook at all da turds!
Me:  Yup, looks like you have five in there.
Cecilia, holding up three fingers:  And dat makes FWEE!
Me:  ...Nope, it makes five...
Cecilia, puzzled:  Mom, don't be siwwy!

Nobody ever claimed she was our smartest child...

Elizabeth, begging me to pick her up:  Bee!  (Please)
Mary Claire, begging for me to pick her up:  *shriek*
Me:  Mary Claire, say please.
MC:  Puppy!
Me:  No, not puppy.  Please.
MC, touching bellybutton:  Beep!
Me:  No, please.
MC, stubbornly:  Bee beh BUH! (B says buh, a la leapfrog fridge phonics)
Me:  No, say please.  Or Pee.  Or Bee.
MC:  *shriek*

So glad we've got another stubborn one on our hands...

Mary Claire is dropping food from her high chair tray onto the floor...

Andrew:  Mary Claire!  Stop dropping food on the floor!
MC:  Puppy!!!

And there you have it.  Carry on.
