21/52: Crafts and Curls

Friday, May 31, 2019

We petered out to an end of the school year last week, which meant the kids spent a lot more time outdoors than in, one of my favorite things! At one point they invented a very elaborate game involving riding bikes while holding large sticks and getting through the Peter barrier involving a garden stake with a pool noodle on it? Another night they made a "lambs quarters factory" and harvested the weeds from the old pig yard, making huge piles of it to "sell." All these brilliant games are, of course, invented right before it's time to go to bed. Because if they're playing peacefully and leaving us alone, they get to stay up later!

Cecilia's most recent Doodle Crate came and, much to her delight, it was a paper making kit! She's been reading about making paper on various craft books she checks out from the library, but we haven't had the proper materials until now. She was so, so pleased, and everybody eagerly watched her put together her creations. We've done Kiwi Crate, Tinker Crate, and now Doodle Crate, and they're all SO well done and the kids love them—an excellent screen-free activity if you're looking for educational & fun things to have your kids do this summer! They also have standalone crates, some on sale, if you don't want a subscription.

Lucy is so, so smiley. Until I take out the big camera, at which point she becomes the most serious child, even if she was all smiles before! So I guess you'll just have to trust me. She channels all that smile energy into growing those ridiculous curls!

And while I'm throwing links at you, the ne newest study from Take Up & Read is out now! It's all about community, and would be the perfect summer study to do as a group.

    1. Yes! We got a mixed packet of columbine seeds and that's one of the few that actually sprouted, we were so excited waiting to see what color it would be!

  2. Cecilia’s face in that picture! She’s got quite the evil eye. I feel like she’s super judging me 😂😂😂

    1. She was having so much fun! I can't figure out why she made that face, maybe because she had too large an audience 😂

    1. I'm holding judgment on hair color though, both Peter and Edith's changed so drastically I have no idea what color hers will be!
