Last year I bought the kids this set of unit blocks for a lesson we were working on, and I honestly don't know why I didn't get a set years ago - they're such a hit, and they get played with nearly every day. I love seeing the different ways the kids use them - Mary Claire and Edith will often turn them into "people" (and then scream at Lucy for wrecking their very careful creations), and I thought this little "girl with umbrella" was really clever. She has a bed on the top floor of her house, thankfully, so she has somewhere safe to sleep. Well, until a giant toddler comes and wrecks everything and then the blocks have to get confiscated for the rest of the day. Not that we know anything about that...

I got Peter this adorable little drawing set for his birthday last year, and he has gotten so much use out of it! He's the kind of kid who really thrives on having actual instructions for drawings, and this has little mini-tutorials throughout, with wipe-off pages for practice. He taped together four pieces of drawing paper so that he could make a huge scene, and I heard him giggling to himself all the while... I thought it was great that he thought his "flying fish" were so funny, but later when I looked at the drawing? There was a stick figure with a huge stream of diarrhea pooping into the ocean, as well as such a thick stream of pee that the fish were "swimming" up the "waterfall." I suppose I should have known that's what was making him giggle so much. At least he's drawing?

  1. Hahah this made me laugh! Those blocks are awesome, we have a train track set that my husband hates because the pieces end up everywhere so I feel like we could never have this *sigh* I try to tell them they’re only little once lol but it only works so much!

    1. Okay sooooooo not to try to enable you BUT the blocks have a nice wooden box that they fit into and it's actually really satisfying arranging them properly when it comes time to clean them up, so they don't end up all over the place! And they're a nice complement to train tracks because you can use them as buildings, supports, etc ;) Very open-ended!

  2. Cracking up over Peter's art!! So hilarious. And that umbrella girl is impressive! The beauty of open-ended toys! I love everything Melissa & Doug makes.

    1. Today he drew a very elaborate picture of a house and I didn't see *anything* inappropriate, I was proud of him 😂
