Pregnant?

Monday, April 29, 2013

I'll spare you the suspense and let you know that NO, I am not pregnant.  But here's a conversation I had with John Paul yesterday:

JP:  Mom is 26...  No, 27!!!
Me:  Yup.  I turned 27.
JP:  And...  You're pregnant!
Me:  Uh...  No I'm not.
JP:  Yes you are!
Me:  No, I'm pretty sure I'm not... (although I suppose I should take one of my many pregnancy tests before they expire, just to be sure?)
JP:  Yes!  You are!  You're lying!!!
Me:  No, I'm not lying!
JP:  Your tummy is getting bigger!  There's a baby in it!

So much for losing that baby weight...

But he kept insisting that I'm pregnant, so I told him I'd take a pregnancy test.

First test:  Inconclusive (then I realized that it was one that I'm pretty sure came in a 2-pack back when we found out we were pregnant with Cecilia 3 years ago...)

Second test:  Negative!

And despite my earlier feelings that I wanted to hopefully wait as long as possible before we have the next baby, Andrew and I are somehow feeling more and more open to closer spacing than we had hoped for.  Maybe because the babies are easier than John Paul and Cecilia were, maybe because they're not mobile yet so we don't realize how crazy everything's going to get, and definitely because God is opening our hearts to a larger family sooner than we had planned.

After all, we've had 1-under-1 (duh), 2-under-2 (twice so far), 3-under-2 (for the first 2.5 months of the twins' lives), 3-under-3 (currently), and 4-under-4 (currently).  I don't think we'll *try* for 5-under-5 (we'd have to get pregnant by the end of October this year), but I think we'd both get a kick out of keeping the trend alive!

So while I still *hope* that we don't get pregnant any time soon, I think I'm at the point where if we found out that somehow we were, it wouldn't feel like the end of the world.

As long as we don't find out we're having twins again...  Not that I don't love them, but 2 sets in a row?  I'd really rather not :P

Yes, it gets crazy around here...  And somehow we're willing to add more crazy to the mix!

  1. Dr. Seuss!!! <3

Great post! I love conversations with children :) Today at the preschool I work at, one of the 3 year olds "accidentally" hit another 3 year old on the head. She told me she couldn't be in trouble though. Why not, I asked? "Because she doesn't have a boo-boo on her." Apparently, no blood = no trouble all around.

    God bless!

  2. You are a great mama! I love how you checked just to sure. Those littles can be pretty prophetic ;)

  3. Isn't it crazy how addictive those little ones are!!! We starting being open to getting pregnant again a lot sooner than we had planned (it took a year and a half to get pregnant, but still). Nfp really opens your heart to the beauty of children, doesn't it? ;-)

  4. Somebody I know was once talking to a (Mormon) mother of 11 at a picnic. She was sitting calmly at a picnic table. "So how do you do it?" my friend asked. "How do you stay so calm and get it all done?"

"Oh, it isn't so difficult," the mother of many told my friend. "The older kids help a lot. After the first six, it gets a lot easier."

  5. You can totally handle a second set of twins...you already know how to do everything with one hand or less. :-)

    1. It's true - we've talked about how much more prepared we'll be for a second set of twins, but if we're going to have twins again I need more spacing :P If Mary Claire and Elizabeth take after Cecilia, I think we could probably handle another set of twins in less then 2 years!

  6. This is so sweet, I love it! It's a grace and a gift, both the kids and our willingness to have them.

    1. And somehow my 3-year-old can tell before we can that we're ready to have more babies :) I tell you what, the Holy Spirit speaks through him more than anyone else!

  8. So hilarious! I love this post. One of my favorite stories that my mother-in-law tells is that my brother-in-law realized that she was acting emotional (read hormonal) and said, "You're pregnant aren't you!?" and she actually was! Brad was older than three though :)

  9. I love "meeting" more and more couples that are becoming open to life and God's perfect timing! If my husband and I weren't struggling with infertility we would be giving you a run for your money ;) haha Your children are absolutely beautiful! I'm looking forward to seeing if you'll be blessed with 5 under 5 ;)

  10. Ah, yes. The magical mystical grace of realizing "SHOOT. God totally changed my heart!" I know it well. My first little nug is extremely high maintenance and terrified me into saying on more than one occasion "maybe we need to wait a looooooong time to have another.... maybe two kids will kill me (feel free to laugh)... maybe I'm too much of a weanie to have a big family." And now that nug is not quite three months old, still high needs, and I'm crazy cakes because I want another baby already. This God character is TRICKY.

  11. Well, I don't know how your son could have thought you LOOKED pregnant! In your pictures from Sunday, you look AMAZING! Always good to trust those little ones, though - sometimes they know things we don't!;) You are an incredible person.

    1. And that's why we keep bulk pregnancy tests on hand! Because maybe he catches on faster than us, although it would be VERY surprising if we were pregnant, given how often the twins nurse :)

  13. My husband's grandmother had 2 sets of twins within a calendar year. She had twins and then another set a year later. True story.

I've felt a lot more open to a much closer spacing after having my last baby as well. My kids are all pretty spaced apart (2.5-4.5 years) but after having Elsa, I realized I would be thrilled with a closer spacing. Nursing tends to work REALLY WELL for me at keeping fertility away, so I don't see it happening, but if it did, we would be thrilled.

I keep bulk pregnancy tests on hand too...and they still work after expired. LOL

  14. I should introduce you to Frances. She has accurately predicted two pregnancies in friends of mine. One before the mom knew she was pregnant and once when the mom knew but hadn't told anyone!

  16. The rest of us would be happy for you to have more babies! Isn't it a nice feeling, to not be worried about it?
